Foreign Tourist Footfall In Varanasi Rises 120 Times; Surpasses Popular Destinations Like Goa & Shimla

In the last three years, Varanasi has witnessed a 120-fold increase in foreign tourism and has welcomed over 11 crore tourists in 2024. This tourism surge has even propelled the spiritual city ahead of traditional favourites like Goa and Shimla.

Varanasi, one of India’s oldest and most spiritual cities, has witnessed an extraordinary boom in foreign tourism, a 120-fold increase that has propelled it ahead of traditional tourist favourites like Goa and Shimla. Known for its sacred ghats, cultural vibrancy, and spiritual experiences, the city is fast emerging as a global hotspot for travellers seeking authentic Indian heritage and soul-stirring experiences.

Varanasi Sees Tourism Boom

According to official data from the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department and the Ministry of Tourism, Varanasi has witnessed a significant surge in tourist arrivals, from both domestic and foreign visitors. The spiritual city welcomed over 11 crore tourists in 2024, marking an 18.7% increase compared to the previous year.

The most interesting trend noted is the surge in foreign tourism in Varanasi over the last three years. As per the official data, only 2,566 foreign tourists visited the city in 2021. In 2022, a foreign tourist footfall rose to 83,741. In 2023, it reached 2,01,904, and in 2024, it witnessed a remarkable surge to 3,09,932.

In the last three years, foreign tourism in Varanasi witnessed a 120-fold increase. And this boom is not showing any signs of slowing down. By June 2025, 1,87,922 foreign tourists had already visited the spiritual city.

Surpasses Goa & Shimla To Become Travellers’ Top Choice

This surge in tourism in Varanasi has propelled it ahead of major hubs like Goa and Shimla. It is to be noted that while international tourism has added to the boom in tourism, domestic footfall also jumped from 30.7 lakh in 2021 to over 10.97 crore in 2024. In the first half of 2025 itself, domestic numbers saw 12.96 crore visitors.
