Uttarakhand: Landslide Hits Near Uttarkashi; Disrupts Transportation On Gangotri Highway

Saturday morning began with unfortunate news near Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand. The state experienced a landslide in the morning. According to various reports, the sudden landslide led to a portion of the important Gangotri National Highway caving in. The natural calamity took place close to the Forest Department Office at Uttarkashi’s Lisa Depot, according to a report by Business Standard.

Landslide On Saturday Morning Created Problems For Traffic Movement

A continuous stretch of almost 60 metre has been reported to cave in following the incident near the Forest Department Office in Lisa Depot. The landslide hitting near Uttarkashi led to some problems in vehicular transportation. Gangotri National Highway is an important highway and sees many vehicles pass through here. But the affected portion turned out to be a hurdle for vehicular movement.

Some officials stated that the reason behind Saturday morning’s landslide is the Tehri Dam located close to the affected place. To help the commuters who are unaware of this incident, the concerned authorities have added a signboard near that area. Informing them beforehand will help the commuters to be cautious and travel safely. This signboard will also help in alerting them and avert chances of further accidents. Vinod Kumar Devadi is the OIC of the Border Roads Organisation. He stated that the senior officials are alerted about the situation using a danger sign board.

Transportation Is A Major Problem Now!

There are some pauses in smooth vehicular movement from Friday. This highway remained closed for transportation from Friday morning. It happened at a place about 500 metres before Bhatwadi. The decision was taken as debris was dropping down on the road continuously. Sudden disruptions in transportation are now becoming an obstacle for commuters. Many devotees are on their way to the Gangotri Dham Yatra at this time. And such pauses are turning out to be a massive and unavoidable problem for them.

On Friday, a major landslide hit on the Kedarnath Yatra route in Gaurikund. This led to destroying houses and shops severely. Many people have been injured due to this scary natural calamity. In fact, about 10 to 12 people are feared of getting buried or washed away because of the Friday landslide.
