Veteran actor Manoj Kumar died at 87 in Mumbai. He was admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital, where he passed away at 3:30 AM on April 4. The cause of death was identified as cardiogenic shock due to acute myocardial infarction. Condolences and heartfelt tributes poured all over social media after his demise.

Actor Manoj Kumar passed away on Friday morning. Born Harikrishna Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, he had been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis for the past few months. He was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after his health was continuously deteriorating.

An iconic figure in Hindi cinema, Manoj Kumar was famously called ‘Bharat Kumar’ for acting and making films with patriotic themes. He received a National Film Award, a Padma Shri in 1992, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015 for his contributions to Indian cinema.

Besides being an ace actor, he even directed films like Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), and Kranti (1981). In an interview with Times Now, he revealed that he wrote many scenes and dialogues for the film ‘Woh Kaun Thi’. He shared that during the Shimla shooting schedule, he felt something was amiss and some lines needed to be changed. He made a few changes and director Raj Khosla ended up tearing up the original script and decided to use Manoj Kumar’s lines.

Tributes Pour In For The Legendary Actor

Since the news of Manoj Kumar’s demise broke out, condolences have been pouring in for the legendary actor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his sadness. He paid tribute to the “icon of Indian cinema”. Indian President Droupadi Murmu and actor Akshay Kumar were among the many who shared their heartfelt tributes for the late actor.
