Gender awareness in society has progressed significantly in recent years. People of the third gender are recognised and they have also earned laurels for their achievements in a plethora of fields. Many incidents in the last few years have shown the country’s acknowledgement of the third gender, from Sruthy Sithara becoming the first Indian to win the Miss Trans world pageant to K.Prithika Yashini becoming the first Indian police officer. However, it took longer for the airlines to become gender-neutral. Recently, two airlines. Vistara and AirAsia established a third gender option for air ticket booking.

An LGBTQIA+ Member Had Filed A Petition In 2020 Demanding Gender Neutrality For Booking Air Tickets
According to the Hindu report, the move of the airlines to include the third gender option came after Inderjeet Ghorpade, a member of ‘YesWeExist’ LGBTQIA+ group lodged a petition in 2020 demanding equality for the third gender for booking air tickets. Ghorpade had attempted to book tickets for one of his friends and had found out that no airlines had an option for the third gender. The incident had prompted Ghorpade to lodge the petition.

This is a commendable step by the airlines and soon other companies too are expected to follow the suit.
