Bengaluru’s Indira Canteens are facing criticism after several complaints about poor food quality surfaced. This prompted the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to review the canteens’ standards and hygiene practices, and they found issues like watery rasam and rubbery chapatis at these canteen facilities. The authorities have now ordered a thorough inspection of all canteens across the west zone of the city.

According to The Times of India, Bengaluru West corporation commissioner Rajendra KV visited some Indira Canteens in the city after receiving complaints about poor food quality being served there. During the inspection, they found that the rasam and sambar were watery. Furthermore, there were barely any dal and vegetables in them. As for the chapatis, they were rubbery and almost inedible, and the rice in some places was undercooked. Hygiene emerged as another major concern at these canteens.
While talking to TOI, the commissioner said that these canteens were launched to provide nutritious meals to the poor and working-class communities. However, the food served was not at all acceptable, and the authorities will take immediate steps to “improve quality and hygiene.”

Audit Of Food Quality Ordered
While talking to The Times of India, an autorickshaw driver who frequently goes to the Indira Canteen in Bengaluru said that he used to visit the canteen because of the subsidised rates. However, the lack of nutrition and hygiene has made him rethink his choices.
Keeping the mounting complaints in mind, the GBA has ordered a thorough inspection of all canteens across Bengaluru’s west zone. This inspection also aims to help them find the reason behind the dropping footfall at these canteens across the city. Despite plans of modernisation, with a digital ordering system and self-service kiosks, there has been a significant drop in the number of diners at these popular low-cost eateries.
Authorities have assured that the concerns will be addressed, with measures underway to ensure better monitoring and improved food quality at the canteens. We hope that this situation will improve soon.
