What Is Abu Dhabi’s New ‘City Treasures’ Initiative & How Does It Celebrate Local Icons?

Some places become part of people’s routines, family stories and everyday memories apart from being just businesses. That’s exactly what Abu Dhabi’s “City Treasures” initiative is recognising once again. This year, 15 long-running establishments across the emirate have been honoured for their role in shaping community life and remaining a familiar part of the city for decades.

From Cafeterias To Tailors, Abu Dhabi Celebrates 15 Local Icons Still Going Strong

While shiny new openings often grab headlines, this initiative shines a light on the places that have quietly stood the test of time.

The awards were presented by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi during a ceremony held at the Cultural Foundation on June 16. The latest group of honourees includes a mix of restaurants, cafeterias, salons, tailoring shops, clinics and retail stores.

Among those recognised this year are Al Amal Medical Center, Miss G Cafe, Dubai Kebab Restaurant & Grill, Syria Cafeteria, Ghandour Cafeteria & Pastries, Hossam Cafeteria, Sea Shell Refreshments and several other businesses that have been serving the community for years.

For many residents, these aren’t just places they visit. They’re places tied to childhood memories, family outings or everyday errands that became habits over time. Some have watched entire neighbourhoods grow around them.

More Than Just Shops And Restaurants

Officials say the initiative is about recognising businesses that helped shape Abu Dhabi’s social and cultural identity.

Over the years, many of these establishments have become local landmarks in their own right. People use them as meeting points, recommend them to visitors and return to them generation after generation.

That sense of familiarity is difficult to create. And even harder to maintain for more than two decades.

A Growing List Of Local Landmarks

Since the programme first began, a total of 75 establishments and landmarks across Abu Dhabi have received recognition through the City Treasures initiative.

The programme forms part of a wider effort to preserve the emirate’s modern heritage and document the stories behind businesses that played a role in its development.

Community members can nominate places they believe deserve recognition. A specialist committee then reviews nominations based on factors such as community impact, historical significance, authenticity and their contribution to Abu Dhabi’s urban identity.

Celebrating The Places That Stayed

Cities change quickly, new cafés open, buildings rise and neighbourhoods evolve. That said, some businesses remain constant and the City Treasure is here to celebrate them.
