What Is Angling And Why Is It Popular In Meghalaya?

Were you aware of angling, a sport which is also a pass-time for numerous individuals all over the worldAgriculture and fishing are the top-most occupations in India and Meghalaya considers this a livelihood and a challenging sport. There fishing enthusiasts participate in Angling as a sport with huge masses flocking to a nearby lake or river with their hooks! Let’s know more about it.

What Is Angling?

Angling is a fishing sport and also a technique. A fishing hook is attached to the fishing line to catch hold of a fish. The hook typically has an appetising bait on it, also called hookbait. It helps to attract fish into swallowing the bait attached to the hook. If a fish takes this bait, then it gets trapped and the fisherperson gets a good catch. This hook is used to tether the fish in the mouth and can’t be free from the hook.

This fishing activity is properly done with the help of a fishing rod, fishing reel and all of the necessary tools. Remember watching cartoons back in the day and coming across fishing scenes with a fishing rod, hook and reel near a lake? This is exactly that but in real life! An angler, as known as the fisherperson, throws the hook and patiently waits for fish to be bait for it.

Do You Know Why Is It Popular In Meghalaya?

Meghalaya is one of the seven sisters of northeast India where folks crazy about fishing, participate in angling. Some take part in this as a popular sport but others depend on angling as a source of income. This state’s major food habit is non-vegetarian, hence the explanation for the livelihood in Meghalaya.

It is considered a pretty serious sport in this state. One such spot where you may come across people engaged in angling is Kynshi village, Mawthadraishan, located in the subdivision of West Khasi Hills. You have to register for the sport and the fee sometimes goes up to ₹3000! What is in for a reward? Well, the prize can go as high a ₹6,00,000 and even a car!

While some have a great angling time with their fellow anglers, residents of Meghalaya have a strict ban on fishing because they believe in recultivating the species of fish and have special ponds for it.
