What Is Menu Anxiety That 41% Of Gen-Z & Millennials Suffer From?

Reading a menu may seem simple, but for some, it can trigger a peculiar sensation known as menu anxiety. This phenomenon involves the overwhelming feeling of indecision and stress when faced with many culinary choices. According to research of the British restaurant company Prezzo, the majority of young people experience menu anxiety when eating in public.

As diners, we find ourselves caught in the intricate web of options, each dish vying for our attention and taste buds. Entering a restaurant is akin to embarking on a culinary odyssey, with the menu as our map through uncharted gastronomic territories. The extensive list of appetisers, mains, and desserts presents an array of flavours, textures, and cuisines that can leave even the most decisive individuals questioning their choices.

The study included 2,000 adults who were asked how they felt upon eating out. According to the findings, 87 per cent of Gen Z adults (aged 18 to 24) experience menu anxiety, compared to 67 per cent of all respondents. Some of these young individuals (34%) are nervous about ordering, so they ask others at the table to do it for them. Most people look forward to dining out during the holiday season, we know that it can be stressful for some, as the research shows.

The worry or anxiety is prompted by the high pricing of meals outside, not being able to find anything they like on the menu, or regretting an order. 40% of Gen Z clients even stated that they would not eat out unless they had reviewed the entire menu beforehand, according to the research.

Another study conducted in the United States discovered that three out of every ten Americans suffer from menu anxiety, with Gen Z customers being more concerned than previous generations. According to the survey, 41 per cent of Gen Z and millennials experience anxiety when ordering, compared to only 15 per cent of Gen X. Even during fun activities such as travelling and dining out, Gen Z folks have reported increased levels of general anxiety.

Menu anxiety is deeply rooted in the psychology of choice. While having options is desirable, an abundance of choices can lead to stress and dissatisfaction. The fear of making the wrong choice can paralyze us, rendering the dining experience more stressful than enjoyable. The menu serves as a symbol of abundance and variety, inviting diners to savour a diverse range of flavours. A well-organised menu with clear sections and visually appealing descriptions can transform the dining experience, making it more enjoyable and less stressful.

As diners, there are several strategies to overcome menu anxiety and transform the dining experience into a delightful adventure.  A well-designed menu should strike a balance between sophistication and accessibility. These can guide diners through the culinary lexicon and ensure they feel informed rather than overwhelmed.

Reading a menu should be a pleasurable prelude to a culinary journey, not a source of anxiety. Do you get menu anxiety too?
