Health authorities in Italy have issued a travel alert following a serious outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in the Milan area. The outbreak, which has tragically claimed the lives of four people, first emerged in April 2024. As of August 19, 53 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been confirmed, with a dozen individuals currently receiving hospital treatment. This severe lung infection is caused by the Legionella bacteria. The bacteria thrive in aerosolised water droplets, which can be inhaled from sources like poorly maintained air conditioning or water systems.
Legionnaires’ disease poses significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups. While it is treatable with antibiotics, it can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly. The exact cause of the outbreak is still under investigation. However, health officials suspect that deficiencies in building water systems in the affected areas might be to blame.

Other signs to watch for are diarrhoea, muscle aches, severe headache, nausea, and confusion. In severe cases, individuals may experience coughing up blood and severe abdominal pain.
