Most people are looking for a change in their lives, whether in terms of their daily lives or the breaks they take in between. People, especially Gen Z, are becoming more curious about exploring unknown, offbeat, and new travel locations. Due to this curiosity, technology, and ecological concerns, Indian tourists are increasingly choosing less-travelled, offbeat, and new areas over popular tourist attractions. There is a dramatic change in their travel preferences.
Reasons Behind New Travel Trends For Gen Z
In a recent report by Hindustan Times, EaseMyTrip co-founder Rikant Pittie cited the increasing popularity of sustainable travel as a result of the demand for unique experiences connecting tourists to local culture and environment. An increasing number of tourists like Gen Z and Millennials are choosing eco-friendly lodging, low-impact activities, and supporting local businesses, which is driving this trend. This change is a result of a greater understanding of how tourism affects the environment and society, as well as a dedication to protecting the natural world and cultural heritage.
While discussing the new off-beat travel trends with Hindustan Times, EaseMyTrip co-founder shared that technology is playing a major role in changing the travel industry. AI-powered tools, tailored suggestions, and virtual reality previews allow tourists to find and book vacations to lesser-known destinations.
Travellers can now easily navigate foreign countries and make well-informed decisions thanks to advancements in travel apps and platforms driven by the demand for seamless connectivity and ease of travel. Another new trend is interest-based travel, which OTAs (online travel agencies) may help by enabling travellers to plan trips around certain interests, enhancing the entire experience and opening up new places.

Which Locations Are Emerging As The Hot Spots For Gen Z?
Furthermore, in the Hindustan Times report, Vinay Bagri, CEO and co-founder of Niyo, reported a 20% increase in spending within Gen Z’s 18-24 age group on off-beat emerging travel destinations. These new locations include nations like Indonesia, Vietnam, Georgia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, driven by the growing popularity of offbeat destinations.
Vinay Bagri also revealed that while Europe and Central Asia are favoured in the summer and fall, Southeast Asian off-the-beaten-path places are increasingly becoming popular in the winter and spring. While Gen Z prefer to spend more on unusual travel destinations, Millennials tend to spend more on conventional travel destinations.
