1. Nirona, Gujarat

The Kutch region in Gujarat has a lot to offer apart from the White Rann. It’s the small villages like Nirona that are one of the main hubs of Bandhani tie-dye, Rogan art and lacquer artistry. Here, you can witness the magic of tie-dyeing fabrics in its real form. You can not only watch but also learn tie-dye and buy various ethnic pieces straight from the loom.

2. Bishnupur, West Bengal 

This small town feels like a walking museum, and all because of its famous terracotta temples and Baluchari silk sarees. One will be astonished watching artisans weave intricate patterns on looms so finely and precisely. The perfect way to enjoy the beauty of the place is to book a local homestay that lets you learn and witness the simple weaving techniques whilst enjoying the traditional culture. 

3. Sualkuchi, Assam 

Not many are aware, but this place is also known as the ‘Manchester of Assam’, and all because of its massive historic centre of traditional handloom and industries. The town produces rich Assam silk that is sold quite expensively all over India. While walking through narrow lanes lined with handlooms, you will find weavers creating luxurious silk sarees. One can also participate in workshops and learn how to thread and make their own mini handwoven keepsake.

Known for Pattachitra paintings and wooden masks, this village is a living heritage. Here each creation is unique and blended with tradition. A guided walk through the village allows you to meet different talented painters, and learn about the culture and the history and even try your hand at making a mini Pattachitra scroll. 

 5. Molela, Rajasthan

Molela, situated in the Rajsamand district, is known for its distinctive terracotta relief work. Here, the artisans are known as Kumhars, and they create sculptures of local deities using clay from the banks of the Banas River.

Another must-visit place to witness art in its true form is Aranmula Kannadi. This village is known for its unique handmade metal-alloy mirror. The technique features a beautiful detailing of various metals, including bronze, copper, and tin, which have been used since the Vedic period. 

7. Longpi, Manipur

Home to the Thankul Naga tribe, Longpi village is known for its unique black stone pottery. The potteries here are made from a mix of black serpentine stone and weathered rocks. These pots are then polished with local leaves to add the final touches.

8. Pattamadai, Tamil Nadu

Pattamadai in Tamil Nadu is another great place to visit for modern art. This place is famous for weaving fine mats from Korai grass. The best part about these mats is that they are made using methods that involve soaking the grass in the Thamirabarani River. 

9. Cheriyal, Telangana

Often, people visit this village to experience the best of scroll paintings. It is a dying art form where scenes from Indian mythology are painted on panels. One of the fun facts about these paintings is that they were traditionally used as storytelling tools.

Bhujodi in Gujarat is another place where you can witness traditional block printing. Here, weavers are called Vankars and are specialised in creating unique, intricate textiles, including sarees and stoles. They use fine materials like kala cotton, silk and merino wool to create such masterpieces.
