Why Is The Price Of Sliced White Bread Increasing By ₹2-8 Per Loaf In Mumbai?

White bread has been a part of the Indian diet, thanks to sandwiches. However, due to the skyrocketing expenses of maida (refined wheat), the price of sliced white bread has increased in Mumbai, dealing a significant blow to the daily household budget. Starting on September 8, major producers like Britannia, Wibs, and Modern all increased their pricing.

The price of the standard white bread, which weighs 350–400 gms, has increased from ₹35 to ₹38. That equals an increase of ₹2 to ₹8 per loaf. The price of the tiny 200 gm loaf has increased from ₹18 to ₹20. There are two types of huge white bread; one weighs about 600–650 g and was formerly priced between ₹52–55. In fact, it is currently rounded to ₹60. The 800 gm loaf of Wibs white bread, which is used by sandwich vendors, is the other big loaf. It now costs ₹75 instead of ₹70.

The present hike has not touched any brown bread. The price of a 50 kg bag of maida has increased from ₹1,500 to ₹1,700, according to Salahuddin Khan, director of Kwality Confectioners and Bakers. That equals ₹34 per kilogramme as opposed to ₹30 previously. Since maida makes up 80 per cent of our raw materials, they are forced to pass along the price increase to the customer. Like yeast and improver, other basic materials have also increased in price.

According to a bakery owner, one bag of maida costs ₹200 more now. Improver, sugar, and the wrapping material for bread are all more expensive. Price increases are always a last choice because they inevitably reduce sales. However, inflation has forced everyone up against the wall.

Maida is used by bakeries to make a variety of products, and they frequently need to raise prices for items like bread that sell quickly to make up for overall product losses. Householders and sandwich vendors are at their wits’ end in the meantime.
