Why Is Vishu Celebrated? From Rituals To Traditional Meal, Here’s All About The Malayali New Year

Vishu, a kaleidoscope of colours, rituals, and delicious food, marks the astrological New Year for Malayali Hindus in Kerala, India. This year, on April 14th, Kerala comes alive to celebrate Vishu, the first day of the Malayalam month Medam. Vishu signifies new beginnings, bountiful harvests, and the promise of prosperity for the year ahead.

The festival revolves around three key aspects: Vishu Kani, Vishu Kaineettam, and Vishu Sadhya. The night before Vishu, an elaborate arrangement called Vishu Kani, meaning “the first sight on Vishu,” is prepared. Families adorn a ritualistic thali (plate) with auspicious items.

To symbolize prosperity, families prominently place Kani-Konna flowers. Fruits and vegetables are added to represent a bountiful harvest, and a mirror for self-reflection is included alongside an image of the revered deity, Lord Krishna.

This vibrant display is believed to set the tone for the upcoming year. To ensure an auspicious first glimpse, families often blindfold their children and lead them to the Vishu Kani for a beautiful first impression.

Vishu Kaineettam translates to “money seen on Vishu.” Elders in the family gift money or gold coins to younger members, signifying the blessings of wealth and prosperity in the new year. This custom fosters financial security and strengthens family bonds.

The festivities culminate in a grand feast called Vishu Sadhya. A vegetarian extravaganza served on a banana leaf, Vishu Sadhya features over two dozen dishes with a distinct regional flavour. Kheer, a sweet rice pudding, aviyal (a vegetable medley), and various curries with fresh seasonal produce are some of the highlights. Families gather around, sharing this scrumptious meal and celebrating new beginnings.
