In a precautionary move, authorities in a Saudi governorate have shut down two fast-food restaurants following a food poisoning outbreak that affected over 100 individuals. The incident occurred in the Abu Arish governorate of Jizan Province, southwestern Saudi Arabia, where more than 100 people were reportedly hospitalized after consuming meals at the two popular eateries. Concerned by the scale of the outbreak, Jizan Governor Prince Mohammed bin Nasser swiftly ordered the formation of an urgent committee to investigate the cause behind the food poisoning.

Prompted by this alarming incident, Prince Mohammed bin Nasser also directed heightened inspections of restaurants and food stores across the province to prevent further outbreaks and ensure public health safety. This proactive stance aims to reassure the public and ensure that all food establishments adhere to the highest hygiene standards.
Recent Cases Highlighting Public Health Risks
This recent incident marks the second major food poisoning outbreak in Saudi Arabia within a span of less than two months. In late April, another outbreak in Riyadh led to 75 people being hospitalized, with one reported fatality. Among the affected were 69 Saudi citizens and six expatriates. This earlier incident also led to swift action by health authorities, highlighting the seriousness with which the kingdom approaches food safety issues.
Authorities in Riyadh conducted thorough epidemiological investigations to pinpoint the source of contamination, attributing the food poisoning to meals served by the restaurant under scrutiny. The Riyadh mayoralty promptly shut down the main supply facility of the establishment involved and all its branches in Riyadh and the neighbouring city of Al Kharj. This decisive action aimed to prevent any further cases and ensure that the root cause of the contamination was addressed.
