Jawahar Kala Kendra (JKK) is a vibrant multi-arts centre located in Jaipur, India, designed to preserve and promote Rajasthani arts and crafts. This unique structure, built between 1986 and 1992, showcases a thoughtful integration of ancient architectural principles with modern design, inspired by the solar system’s arrangement.
Designed by renowned architect Charles Correa, JKK’s layout is based on the Vastu Purush Mandala, reflecting the cosmic structure of the universe. Specifically, it embodies the Navagraha concept, representing nine squares that correspond to the nine planets in Hindu astrology. Each square symbolises a planet, contributing to the centre’s rich cultural narrative.
The JKK is reminiscent of a red fort, with no windows on its facade, emphasising its robust design. The eight blocks of the centre house various facilities, including museums, theatres, art studios, and a library. The entire complex is surrounded by an 8-meter-high wall, echoing the fortifications of the old city of Jaipur.
