As cliche as it sounds, one man’s food is another man’s poison. And one nation’s street food might seem unsavoury to others. While Indian street food comprises of pani puri, dahi puri, vada pav, pav bhaji, masala puri and more. Street food in Thailand leans towards deep-fried grasshoppers, silkworms and even scorpions. Recently, a viral video shows how  a woman prepares a deep-fried scorpion and serves it in Thailand. And Netizens aren’t pleased.

Video Of Deep-Fried Scorpion In Thailand Goes Viral

Food vlogger, Saurabh Birari AKA @foodie_saurabh_ took to Instagram to give his followers a glimpse of street food in Thailand. And yes, it can give you the heebie-jeebies. More importantly, this video relieves your curiosity about how the local prepare these unusual snacks in the first place. In the video, a woman adds a scorpion on a thin stick in a pan filled with hot oil. The black scorpion sizzles in hot oil.

After deep-frying it, the woman removes the scorpion from the pan and drizzles soy sauce on it. She places the arachnid on a paper plate and tops it with an assorted spice mix. In a blue bowl, the woman adds fried grasshoppers. The street food vendor also goes on to deep fry cockroaches in hot oil.

Trust Netizens to take to Instagram to slam the deep-fried scorpion delicacy from Thailand. @kaju_2630 comments “Chiiiiiiiiii thu”. @priyanka__dav comments “Hamre yahan dar jate h dekhte hi” ( At our place we get scared of just seeing it). @world_of_choices9 says “Basically anything that moves! I heard they don’t even spare rocks these days”. @best_day_2479 asks  “Have you tried eating scorpions too?”

Why Do Locals Enjoy Eating It?

In Thailand, scorpions are considered a rare and delicious street food delicacy. The arachnids, known to be poisonous, become safe for consumption after cooking them.  The locals believe it to be high in protein and crispy. Street food markets in Thailand sell grasshoppers, crickets and silk larvae throughout the year. But scorpions are seasonal delicacies.
