Women in Ladakh’s hidden gem, Phyang village have often worked unseen as a cook, farmworker and cleaner. With many of their husbands enrolled in the Army, their household work similar all across the country has gone unrecognised and unrewarded. Well, not anymore. The women in Phyang village are now transforming into homestay hosts, and are finding confidence as mini-entrepreneurs. Tourists can stay at a homely accommodation, feast on traditional Ladakhi food and get up close with the warm locals.
Stay At Cosy Homestays Hosted By Women Entrepreneurs In Phyang
Nestled 15km away from Leh, the mountain village of Phyang is an upcoming tourist attraction in the Leh-Ladakh region. Women in Phyang are hosting travellers in their homes as a convenient solution to earning a living. Some rooms of the traditional Ladakhi home are listed on the Self Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA)- Airbnb partnership platform. The tariff for the rooms at these homestays is priced at around ₹2,000 per night. These rooms feature basic facilities, breathtaking views, and kitchens stocked with Ladakhi food like local fruits and traditional bread.

According to a Hindustan Times report, tourists also have easy access to popular destinations like Leh, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Siachen, Sangam, Nubra Valley and Pangong. Tejas Raval of SEWA revealed to Hindustan Times that these homestays at Phyang give tourists the opportunity to interact with the local hosts and learn more about the culture of the place, unlike hotels. This is the beauty of staying at a homestay in Phyang hosted by women. It will empower them and also help tourists build a strong connection with the warm locals and rich Ladakhi lifestyle.
