“Wonder What Amul Is Adding To Their Ice Creams These Days.” Doctor Finds Oily Liquid In Ice Cream Ordered From Zepto In Bengaluru

A doctor in Bengaluru has raised concerns about the quality of a recent online ice cream purchase. Dr. Nandita Iyer, a food and health columnist, took to the social media platform X (Formerly, Twitter) to share her experience with a tub of Amul Vanilla Gold ice cream ordered through Zepto.

Unpleasant Surprise In Online Ice Cream Order

Dr. Iyer’s post included a picture of the ice cream, which showed that a frothy, oily liquid had separated and settled on one side of the container. “Wonder what Amul is adding to their ice creams these days,” she wrote in her post, tagging Zepto. “Ordered Amul vanilla gold from @ZeptoNow and opened it instantly. An oily frothy liquid has separated. Gross stuff.”

The doctor’s post went viral, sparking discussions about food safety and proper storage practices. Many social media users expressed disgust at the image, while others shared similar experiences of receiving subpar groceries through quick commerce apps.

Quality Control Concerns

The incident has cast a spotlight on the potential shortcomings of quick commerce services, particularly concerning temperature-sensitive items like ice cream. Dr. Iyer’s post suggests that the ice cream might not have been stored at a consistently low temperature during its journey from the Zepto warehouse to her doorstep. This could have caused partial melting and separation of the ice cream’s ingredients, leading to the unappetising oily liquid.

The ideal storage temperature for ice cream is typically around -18°C. At such temperatures, the ice cream remains frozen solid, preventing the fat and other components from separating. However, during delivery through quick commerce services, where speed is a key factor, maintaining such low temperatures throughout the entire process can be challenging. The incident raises concerns not just about Zepto’s delivery practices but also about the packaging of the ice cream itself.

While Zepto has not yet issued an official statement regarding Dr. Iyer’s experience, the incident highlights the importance of robust quality control measures for quick commerce companies.  This includes ensuring proper storage temperatures are maintained throughout the supply chain, from warehouse to customer, and investing in insulated packaging solutions for temperature-sensitive items.
