World’s First Hydrogen Powered Train Inaugurated In Germany

A lot of countries today, are resorting to a more sustainable way of transport and travel. Thanks to the constant reports of climate change and global warming which are for sure real. In a significant move, Germany has inaugurated a powerline which is entirely run on ‘hydrogen’. These hydrogen trains were provided by Alstom to Germany, and will connect cities of Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervoerde and Buxtehude near Hamburg. Overall, Germany has 14 hydrogen powered trains in its fleet.

Hydrogen Train In Germany Are Zero-Emission Transport

The train runs on hydrogen mixed with oxygen from the air. It is said to have zero emissions while running as it produces electricity that pulls the train. As per a report by Al Jazeera, ‘The fleet, which cost 93 million euros ($93m), would prevent 4,400 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere each year.’ This implies that a lot of warming and atmospheric damage can be controlled with the launch of these hydrogen trains. For the unversed, the introduction of these hydrogen trains have created jobs for both France and Germany. These trains have gone through commercial trials right from the 2018 and it has been formally launched this year.

Train & Transport Sector In Germany

For these hydrogen-run trains, hydrogen filling stations have also been installed on the route for making transport easier. As per media reports, these trains run at a speed of 140 kmph (87mph). These trains also emit no harmful gases and produce only water. From the 14 trains, five of them have already started operating on certain routes. A kilogram of hydrogen fuel equals 4.5 kilogram of diesel fuel.
