Indian travellers and the Indian diaspora in Europe could soon have a new budget option for travel, with Hungarian airline Wizz Air planning direct flights between India and various European destinations. The airline is targeting average one-way fares as low as 200 euros (around ₹18,000).

This ambitious plan hinges on the Airbus A321XLR, a long-range version of the A321 aircraft that Wizz Air is set to receive from next year. These new planes will have the range to connect various European cities with India, something not possible with Wizz Air’s current fleet. The airline hopes to launch flights as early as next financial year, subject to regulatory approvals in both India and Europe.

Wizz Air CEO József Váradi highlighted the high cost of existing direct flights between India and Europe, dominated by full-service carriers. He believes Wizz Air’s low fares will be a game-changer, attracting both tourists and the Indian diaspora seeking affordable travel options. Initial plans involve connecting “six to seven” European cities with major Indian airports. Interestingly, Váradi suggests fares could even dip below 100 euros for the cheapest tickets.

To operate these flights, Wizz Air needs approval from Indian aviation authorities. They are currently in discussions with the Indian government and regulators. Additionally, they need recognition for their existing designations as a carrier in Italy, Austria, and Hungary.

Wizz Air is a well-established budget airline with over two decades of experience. They operate a network of over 750 routes across 50 countries, with a fleet of over 200 aircraft. They are keen to expand their reach further, with ambitions to start flights between Abu Dhabi and India as well.

While Wizz Air’s entry could shake up the India-Europe travel market, they aren’t the only player eyeing the A321XLR. IndiGo, an Indian low-cost carrier, is also acquiring these planes and could potentially launch similar direct flights to Europe. This increased competition can only benefit travellers seeking affordable and convenient options for connecting between India and Europe.
