The history of Darjeeling is rich and diverse. In the Darjeeling hills, nestled within the intricacies of the Himalayan mountain range, are little villages with abundant natural resources to encourage environmentally conscious travel. Situated at an altitude of 6500ft, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, close to Darjeeling, is the stunning mountain village of Dawaipani. Dawaipani translates to “medicinal water.” In this pristine hamlet, one can witness the splendid view of Kanchenjunga and Darjeeling town.

Pristine Hamlet In The Himalayas

The town overlooks rolling green tea fields and beautiful hill slopes dotted with villages. On a clear day, the magnificent snow peaks, topped by Mt Kanchenjunga, may be seen etched against the azure sky. A wide diversity of birds can be seen in the woodlands surrounding Dawaipani. Many people are unaware of this village. The natural splendour of the village is breathtaking. an unusually calm, noise-free, pollution-free environment. This unexplored haven, far from the tourist-laden paths, offers a glimpse into a world where time seems to stand still.

It is almost 20 km away from the town of Darjeeling.  Darjeeling’s entire hill town can be seen to the left. Lebong is located directly beneath this village. Sikkim’s Namchi can be seen ahead. The Lamahatta Pine Forest can be seen to the right. Above all, the magnificent Kanchenjunga views should not be missed. When the lights of Darjeeling come on in the evening, the vista from Dawaipani is breathtaking. Moreover, the backdrop of the majestic Kanchenjunga mountain range adds a sense of grandeur to the picturesque scenery. The air is crisp, infused with the fragrance of wildflowers and the subtle scent of tea plantations that carpet the hillsides.

Additionally, life in this quaint hamlet unfolds at a leisurely pace, mirroring the unhurried rhythm of nature. Here, the inhabitants practise organic farming. The organic farms in the village are also open for you to see. Moreover, a walk through the village reveals charming thatched-roof houses adorned with vibrant flowers, each telling a unique story of family and heritage.

What To Do Here?

The village is a haven for nature enthusiasts, providing an opportunity to explore the unspoiled wilderness. The Senchal forest falls in this village. One can undertake numerous short hikes through the forest from the village. Trekkers are welcome to participate in this.

If you enjoy being outside, you can take short hikes into the nearby forests from Dawaipani. It’s about a 6-kilometer drive to Lamahatta. The large planted garden stretching across the hillside at Lamahatta is well-known. Perched atop the hillock is a small lake with alpine trees around. However, there’s a difficult stepped route that you must climb to get to the lake.

The untold stories, hidden trails, and enchanting landscapes beckon, inviting explorers to immerse themselves in the timeless charm of this lesser-known hamlet.
