The Elijah Rock is carved into a large rock that has mystical markings. It is considered a sacred rock by the local Hindus and Bene Israel Jews. It is believed that the markings came from the hooves of Elijah the Prophet’s horse, and the chariot when Elijah proceeded to ascend to heaven.

It is also known as Ghodyacha Tap or Ghod Khatar, or Prophet Elijah’s Site. Here, Ghod means horse, and Khatar means stone. The similar markings increased the curiosity of local Hindus, and it connects to the Sagoan Maruti, near Talvali, which is a village adjoining Karle. It is a well-known temple for Lord Hanuman.

The rock used to be huge and covered the pond. The freshwater running has filled up the deep horse hoof indents into puddles. In front of this, people lay flowers, burn incense sticks, and break coconuts for local customs. People also come here to perform various auspicious ceremonies.

The easiest option is to book a ticket for the ferry to Alibaug. It takes less than an hour and is very budget-friendly with prices as low as ₹150 per person. You may take your personal car, then it’s a three-hour road trip. There are buses available as well, you have to book tickets in advance.
