If you’re a frequent flyer at Mumbai Airport, or even if you’ve visited the city just once, you’ve likely seen the iconic peacock-inspired carpet at Terminal 2. It welcomes passengers as they step off their flights and enter the terminal. By March 2027, this familiar feature will be replaced with terrazzo flooring. Here’s everything you need to know.
Mumbai Airport Set To Bid Adieu To The Iconic Peacock Carpet
According to the Free Press Journal, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is set to bid farewell to its iconic peacock-inspired carpet at Terminal 2. The custom-woven carpet will be replaced with terrazzo flooring as part of the airport’s modernisation project.
Installed in 2014 as part of Terminal 2’s design vision, the carpet was woven using the historic Axminster weaving technique. In this, each yarn tuft is mechanically locked into the base structure. This gave the flooring a heavy, three-dimensional texture designed to withstand the constant movement of heavily loaded baggage trolleys and millions of passengers.
While the carpet retained its premium appearance for over a decade, the steady rise in passenger traffic placed it under increasing strain. Over time, feedback from travellers highlighted structural challenges. This prompted airport authorities to prioritise long-term durability, cleanliness, and smoother movement for wheeled baggage.
Flyers will now be welcomed by high-performance terrazzo flooring, with the replacement project expected to be completed by March 2027.

What Flyers Can Expect Now?
Following some material testing, stress simulations, and localised trial installations, Mumbai Airport authorities have selected epoxy terrazzo as the new flooring material for Terminal 2, the Free Press Journal reported.
The non-porous, seamless surface allows for faster mechanical cleaning, eliminating the need for intensive vacuuming and deep-shampoo treatments. While the iconic carpet will be removed, the airport’s signature peacock motif will remain a key design element. The new terrazzo flooring will incorporate the same theme.
