Auto Rickshaw And Taxi Drivers Go On Strike In Ahmedabad
In Ahmedabad, the “Rozgar Bachao” (Save Employment) protest began on Monday, September 7, and will continue till September 10. As per Bhaskar English, around 3.7 lakh auto rickshaw and taxi drivers are taking part in it, including the Ahmedabad Rickshaw Chalak Ekta Sangh. The strike has been announced in protest against online ride-hailing platforms. However, the protest has received mixed responses.
Despite the protest, many auto rickshaw and taxi drivers are still operating in the city. So, to make them stop, an auto rickshaw driver near Ranip bus station arrived with a stick and forced passengers to get out of the vehicle. The passenger had to walk to her workplace. People in Ahmedabad now feel that such a protest can affect the commute, making it difficult for people to reach their destination.

Drivers Raise Concerns Over Earnings
The auto rickshaw and taxi drivers are struggling with their earnings in the city. According to Bhaskar English, one driver, Ashish Gamiti, said that he and other drivers are struggling because of two-wheeler rides operating via apps. He also mentioned that drivers in Ahmedabad are not receiving the fares fixed by the government.
Another driver said that many times passengers refuse to pay metered fares. He said the government increased fares by ₹20 to ₹25, but online platforms sometimes still show fares of only ₹10 to ₹12. The unions now want strict action against these two-wheelers and want everyone to follow government-approved fares.
The unions submitted a memorandum to the Transport Commissioner in Gandhinagar on August 27. A day later, they started their protest by putting posters on auto rickshaws. As they did not get a positive response from the administration, they decided to go on a four-day strike.
