Almost 1 Crore Women Have Travelled In Karnataka State Buses For Free Under The ‘Shakti’ Scheme

For the third consecutive day, it continued, and people saw a surge in the usage of ‘Shakti’ scheme. About 51.53 lakh women are travelling in non-premium buses for free from the state-run road transport corporations. The state exchequer incurred ₹10.82 crore in expenses. The scheme rolled out on Sunday, and on Tuesday, about 20.57 lakh women took a free ride in Bengaluru.

As about 20.57 lakh women took free rides in state buses in Bengaluru, the government incurred a cost of ₹2.02 crore. However, 13.98 lakh women who rode in buses operated by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation received the largest amount of spending from the state government of ₹4.12 crore. 

The North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation transported up to 11.09 lakh women. 5.89 lakh women travelled on Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation routes, costing ₹2.72 crore.

In just three days after the Shakti scheme was introduced in the state, 98,58,518 women rode for free on public transport, at a cost of ₹21.06 crore to the state exchequer. 

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), wholly owned by the state government, provides routes to towns and cities in the southern part of the state of Karnataka as well as connections to neighbouring states. (as per Hindustan Times)

One Of The Five Promises 

Karnataka’s transport department launched the Shakti Scheme on Monday, allowing women to take the bus for free. It is one of the five promises the new administration made to Karnataka’s citizens. 

The scheme, which begins on June 11, is only open to women with a residence in Karnataka. Additionally, the programme will cover female students and members of linguistic minorities. For the first three months, recipients must show a government-issued photo ID with address confirmation.
