Mumbai Airport’s international terminal (T2) station belonging to the underground metro station will soon be home to India’s tallest escalator. While the highest escalator in India now is located at Delhi Metro’s Janakpuri-West station, things are about to change soon, as Mumbai Airport cum metro station is reaching new heights. Literally!

Mumbai Airport’s Underground Station To Welcome India’s Tallest Escalator

The escalator at Mumbai Airport’s underground T2 metro station will span 19.15m. This will cross the national record held by India’s current highest escalator at Delhi Metro spanning 15.6m in length. India’s highest escalator will be higher than even an 8-storey building. As per a report by Mumbai Live, not one, not two but 8 escalators of 19.15m will be set up at Mumbai Metro’s international airport terminal (T2) station.

An MMRC spokesperson revealed to the Times Of India that a 250-ton crane will be used to lower the 8 escalators within confined spaces. The underground Colaba-Bandra-Seepz corridor of the CSMIA T-2 station will house 14 escalators in all. Out of these 8 will be the tallest in India. So, why is Mumbai Metro installing the tallest escalators in India?

Well, the reason behind it is that the CSMIA T2 station is one of the deepest stations of the Metro 3 line. Also, apart from India’s tallest escalator, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has also announced the installation of Mumbai’s first-ever travellator. This will ferry people between the monorail station at the upcoming Metro 3 underground station and the space between Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Mahalaxmi railway station.

Well, the world’s tallest single escalator award goes to Russia’s St. Petersburg. This is installed in the city’s deep underground stations. Otherwise, this coveted title of the world’s tallest escalator is held by Hong Kong. The 135-metre tall escalators of Central Mid-level Escalator escalators run for 800 metres.
