However, there is one river in Arunachal Pradesh that stands out for a very different reason. Why Lohit River Is Called “River Of Blood”
The Lohit River starts from the Zayal Chu range of eastern Tibet and enters India through Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district. The river flows for around 200 kilometres through deep valleys, dense forests, and remote tribal regions before joining the Brahmaputra in Assam. Along the way, it passes through Walong, Hawai, and Tezu.
The Lohit River is called the “River of Blood” because of both geology and mythology. During heavy rainfall, iron-rich laterite soil from the Lohit Valley and Mishmi Hills washes into the river, giving the water a reddish colour that looks similar to blood.
According to mythology, the river is also connected to Parashuram Kund. Legend says that Parashuram bathed in the river to seek forgiveness after beheading his mother, Renuka, on his father’s orders. Many people believe her blood turned the river red.

Best Time To Visit
If you’re planning to visit the Lohit Valley, the best time to go is between October and April. Since the region is located in Arunachal Pradesh, Indian travellers need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), while foreign nationals must obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP).
To reach the Lohit Valley, you can fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. If you’re travelling by train, the nearest railway stations are Naharlagun and Itanagar.
