Assam has now added a brand-new chapter to its rich tea legacy. The state has officially become the first in India to commercially produce the global favourite, matcha tea, and we can’t contain our excitement. According to the state’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma’s X post, this diversification into the viral drink will help strengthen Assam Tea in global markets.
You will be delighted to know that matcha tea will be commercially produced at the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia. This has been made possible due to the strong India-Japan ties. The collaboration has helped bring Japanese expertise in Matcha production techniques and machinery to Assam’s tea sector.

The First Lot Of Matcha Sold For ₹3,000
According to the Chief Minister’s announcement, the first lot of matcha was sold for ₹3,000 at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre. This is definitely great news for India’s tea industry. India currently relies heavily on imports from Japan to meet the growing demand for matcha.
But now, India will have its own production, and we think that’s amazing. Matcha is becoming increasingly popular in India, especially among Gen Z. The green-coloured powder is used in countless recipes, but the most popular way to enjoy it is in a Matcha Latte, known for its earthy yet refreshing taste. Matcha is also rich in antioxidants, making it a popular choice among health-conscious people.
