Bengalureans are witnessing unwanted visitors as snakes have slithered into homes as rains have lashed the city. The breeding season for snakes has led to a significant rise in reptile sightings in various areas like Yelahanka and Bommanahalli in Bengaluru. In fact Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has received over 100 calls in a week from distressed residents.

Bengaluru Witnesses Rise In Snakes Due To Rainy Season

As per a report by The Times Of India (TOI), Bengaluru has seen a rise in snake sightings which has led to widespread worry amongst residents. On Sunday alone, BBMP received around 40 calls of snakes crawling into residential premises. A resident, Sachin K stated that a snake appeared inside his home around 4 pm. He called the BBMP wildlife rescue team to help with this matter. But the team arrived only at 7 pm. Many have expressed frustration over the administrative body’s slow response.

Another resident, Anita Murali from Uttarahallu witnessed a snake for the first time in 25 years. She told TOI that she saw a snake slithering from her neighbour’s compound to her home. She immediately dialed BBMP but by then the snake went away on its own. The wildlife rescue team consists of just seven people responding to distress calls across the city. Despite the numerous challenges, BBMP has rescued cobras, water snakes and Russell’s vipers from the homes of people.

BBMP Gets Over 100 Calls Per Week Amid Breeding Season

A member of the BBMP team, Prasanna Kumar said that baby snakes are being found in bushy areas. With increased humidity and light rains, the snakes slowly make their way out. The deputy conservator of forests, BLG Swamy told Bengalureans to not hit, kill or hold snakes. In case of a snake bite, people mustn’t get worried. Rather, seek immediate medical help.
