According to an article recently published by the Hindustan Times or HT, the redevelopment of the Gabba will go ahead once the government accepts the project validation report. As per Steven Miles, who is the Queensland state’s Deputy Premier and is cited in the HT article, this undertaking would increase the seating capacity of the stadium to 50,000.

In addition to this, it will also connect the stadium to the local railway station that has recently been built underground. It will improve the connectivity to the stadium. However, a local primary school as well as the cricket teams will have to be temporarily relocated in order to make way for the reconstruction. The stadium has been the state’s cricket headquarters for more than a century at this point.

The Brisbane Lions, which is one of the leading clubs of the Australian Football League, will also have to be temporarily relocated. The renewal of the stadium will trigger an urban renewal and once the new stadium is built, the surrounding area, too, will become one of the best parts of the city to live in, as per the Deputy Premier of Queensland state.

According to Miles, the construction of the stadium will take a total of four years. The construction will begin after the Ashes Cricket test that Australia will play against England. This will take place late in 2025. Hence, the construction will begin in 2026 and end approximately by 2030. In July 2021, Brisbane was selected as the host city for the 2032 Olympics.

With no rival bid, Brisbane became the third Australian city to host the Olympics. Prior to Brisbane, Sydney hosted the Olympics in the year 2000. Melbourne was the first Australian city to host the Summer Games in the year 1956. As of now, the Gabba has a seating capacity of 42,000. As per Miles, the project validation report evaluated four possible alternatives to revamp the Gabba. However, demolishing it and rebuilding it from scratch was the best value outcome for the city.
