Recently, a pregnant woman safely delivered a baby onboard the Avadh Assam Express after she went into labour during the journey. The railway staff, medical teams and an onboard nurse coordinated well to ease the emergency response. Read on to know more.
Pregnant Woman Delivers Baby Mid-Train Journey
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the incident took place on June 14 aboard Train No. 15910 (Lalgarh-Dibrugarh) Avadh Assam Express. The traveller experienced labour pain as the train approached Rangiya railway station, leading to an immediate response from the railway officials.
Railway officials then teamed up with the Rangiya Control, Commercial and Medical Departments to provide emergency assistance. A medical team supervised by Dr Sarat Chandra, Divisional Medical Officer of Rangiya Division, was ready and arrived at Rangiya station before the train’s arrival. At the same time, with the help of the train’s coach attendant and Krishnama Goldsmith Bezbaruah, a nurse from Jorhat Christian Mission Hospital who was also travelling on the train, the woman successfully delivered the baby onboard.
The Railway Staff Successfully Delivered The Baby
As the train arrived in Rangiya, the mother and newborn were cared for by the waiting medical team and immediately transferred to Rangiya Railway Hospital for urgent care.
As the baby was born prematurely, both were then taken by railway ambulance to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for specialised treatment and observation. The Railway officials further stated that both the mother and child were stable.
The Northeast Frontier Railway also appreciated the efforts of its staff and specially appreciated the role played by Mrs Krishnama Goldsmith Bezbaruah during the emergency.

Railway officials claimed that the incident highlighted the importance of coordinated emergency response systems to ensure passenger safety during unforeseen situations.
