Rail connectivity across Indian cities plays a crucial role in making travel easier for passengers. Now, focusing on improving rail connectivity between North and South Bihar, Indian Railways has opened a new bridge over the Ganga. The newly opened Mokama rail bridge is adding another route for passenger and freight trains. Scroll down for the details!

Will Mokama Rail Bridge Replace Existing Rajendra Pul?

The Mokama Rail Bridge started service on October 5, 2026. This new bridge was opened at a cost of ₹2,400 crore. According to The Indian Express, it runs parallel to the existing Rajendra Pul. The Rajendra Pul has been an important route since 1959 and will not be replaced. The Mokama Rail Bridge is built 50 metres from the existing Rajendra Pul, towards Patna.

The entire railway project stretches around 15.5 km and includes a 1.9-km main bridge over the Ganga. It connects Mokama and Barauni, with the main bridge featuring 17 steel sections. The project also includes 3.6 km of rail viaducts, eight smaller bridges, two road overbridges and three rail-over-rail structures.

How Will It Ease Movement On The Delhi-Howrah Route?

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inspected the railway line on October 3 and 4, 2026. After receiving safety clearance, train services started around midnight. According to East Central Railway, the first train to cross the Mokama Rail Bridge was Mahananda Express (15483).

As per The Indian Express, with the Mokama Rail Bridge, two new railway lines have been added beside the existing single-line bridge. Now, more trains can run on the Delhi-Howrah route, which will help reduce pressure on this busy route. The new bridge will also give trains another route between North and South Bihar. Train traffic on the route could also increase by around 2.5
