The number of coronavirus cases in India is still on the rise. At present, India has a total of nearly 5.49 million coronavirus cases and the death toll has crossed 87,880. But then, with the easing of lockdown restrictions in the country, people are becoming more careless and are failing to abide by the guidelines of safety and social distancing. Several states in India have been imposing fines on people for not wearing face masks. The fine amount on mask violators in Mumbai is ₹200. And ever since the pandemic hit Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has collected more than ₹1 crore from people not wearing face masks in public. In the month of September, the authority collected nearly ₹30 lakhs in three days. Pune police had also collected ₹1crore penalty in a month for not wearing masks and spitting in public.
₹1 Crore Collected In Mumbai From People Not Wearing Face Masks
Mumbai is one of those Indian cities with the highest count of coronavirus cases. The total number of cases in Maharashtra now is around 1.19 million with 32,216 deaths. But reportedly, assistant commissioner of N Ward covering Ghatkopar, Ajitkumar Ambi, said, “Earlier 10-20 people would be fined in a day or two, which has now risen to 60-70. Our officials visit common areas where people are found violating norms — outside hotels, grocery stores, delivery joints and industrial areas.” BMC has collected a fine amount of over ₹1 crore since the start of the pandemic and nearly ₹30 lakhs in three days in September. Ambi added, “The idea is not to collect fine but to encourage people to follow all safety measures.” BMC is also providing 10 percent incentive to its staff of the total fine collected each day. Meanwhile, Kolkata ghats also witnessed huge crowds violating social distancing rules to take a holy dip.

Mumbai Increases The Number Of ICU Beds By 250
The number of beds in Mumbai’s intensive care units (ICUs) has also increased by 250. There are 1,786 ICU beds in Mumbai. As per reports, the authorities roped in ICU beds as the private sector stays in demand for coronavirus treatment. On the other hand, the coronavirus lockdown has been a major blow to many independent businesses in Mumbai. Reportedly, if the economic situation doesn’t see much improvement by Diwali, 25 percent of Mumbai shops might permanently shut down.
