501 Buildings Flagged As ‘Dangerous’ In Navi Mumbai; NMMC Orders Evacuation Of 51

Following a ward-wise structural survey, the NMMC has identified and declared 501 buildings in Navi Mumbai as ‘dangerous’ for occupancy. Of these, 51 structures have been classified under the ‘C-1’ category, making them extremely dangerous and unfit for habitation. Scroll on to know more about this.

NMMC Declared 501 Building In Navi Mumbai Dangerous For Occupancy

According to Hindustan Times, during a survey conducted under Section 264 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has declared 501 buildings in the city as structurally dangerous. 51 of these buildings have been ordered for immediate evaluation as they fall under the ‘C-1’ category.

Furthermore, 104 buildings were classified under the ‘C-2A’ category. This means these structures require evacuation followed by structural repairs. About 297 buildings fell under ‘C-2B’, which means they need repairs without evacuation. Finally, 49 buildings are categorised under ‘C-3’, which means the structures need only minor repairs.

Reportedly, written notices have been issued to owners and occupants of the listed buildings. These notices state that “continued residential or commercial use poses serious threats to life and property.” Taking into account the seriousness of the structural damage to these buildings, the power and water supply to C-1 buildings will be disconnected. This will be done as per directives of the Maharashtra Urban Development Department, under the circular dated November 5, 2015.

Slight Improvement From Last Year

Several media reports show that the number of dangerous buildings in Navi Mumbai has dropped from 2024’s count of 527. The data further show that last year’s survey identified 62 buildings in the high-risk C-1 category, 113 in C-2A, 303 in C-2B, and 49 in C-3.

While talking to Hindustan Times, Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde confirmed that building owners and occupants have been served notices with warnings against the continued occupation of these unsafe structures. He said that if residents continued to occupy the buildings then they would “bear sole responsibility for any loss of life or property resulting from structural failure” and that the civic body can not be held accountable.

Keeping the monsoon season in mind, NMMC has urged people to prioritise safety and vacate the dangerous buildings immediately.
