One of the most significant aspects of Odisha’s cultural heritage is its temples. And now,  an ancient Hindu temple in the city of Bhubaneswar has been declared an ancient monument of national importance. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, recently made this declaration for the Kapilesvara Temple. This also calls for immediate care and protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Kapilesvara Temple Is Now An Ancient Monument Of National Importance

Located on the banks of the River Mahanadi, the Kapilesvara Temple is an ancient one. The river adds to the serenity and natural beauty of the temple complex. What makes the temple well known is its elaborate sculptures and carvings. They depict scenes from Hindu mythology and the life of Lord Shiva.  Today, the Kapilesvara Temple remains an important pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Shiva and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

The temple architecture is typical of the Kalinga style. Think pyramid-shaped roofs and elaborately carved pillars and walls. It has undergone several renovations and restorations over the years. However, its original architecture and design have been carefully preserved.

Moreover, the Indian government has declared many of these temples as protected monuments. They have undergone extensive restoration and conservation efforts to preserve their original architecture and design, in addition.
