Soon, Canada will get its first free grocery store. Regina Food Bank in Saskatchewan is all set to launch the Community Food Hub which will be a full-scale free grocery store. To open at 1881 Broad St. in Regina, this Food Hub will be stocked like any other grocery store. However, you won’t have to pay anything after you’re done shopping here.
The Community Food Hub is for people who rely on the food bank for food security. Regina Food Bank aims to provide healthy food options to these people and allow them to choose what suits their dietary needs and preferences. That’s why, this grocery store will have a produce section, massive display fridges, and will be open all week.
Regina Food Bank is an NGO that runs various programs to fight hunger in Regina. They provide food to those who need it and take volunteers and donations to run the food bank. Understanding certain limitations of the food bank, they have now decided to launch the Community Food Hub to fight food insecurity through nutritious food distribution and making it available for all.

Why Is There A Need For Community Food Hub?
According to a CBC report, since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a massive increase in food bank users in Canada and 25% of them are in Regina alone. As per data, one in eight families is now food insecure in the city. However, the canned or boxed food that is usually provided at community centres and food banks doesn’t always work for everyone. Issues like dietary restrictions, allergies, proper nutrition, and even synergistic flavours were noted by the NGO. That’s why to give people a choice that allows them to choose what they want to eat and feed their families, they decided to launch the Community Food Hub.
While talking to CBC News, David Froh, Regina Food Bank’s vice-president said that giving people choices not only saves their dignity but will also help the NGO feed 25% more people.
While the date of opening of the free grocery store isn’t out yet, we must applaud this NGO for its great initiative. You can visit their website here to learn more about their programmes and initiatives.
