It has been some time since political tensions escalated between India and Canada. In between the unrest, the latest announcement by the Canadian government about travellers heading to India grabbed everyone’s attention. Canada has decided to lift its extra security screening measures for passengers travelling to India. The unexpected news comes a few days after the measures were implemented.
Canada Withdraws Extra Security Screening
The Canadian government has announced its withdrawal from the recently introduced enhanced security screening measures for people flying to India, according to a report by the Canadian Broadcaster CBC. It is no longer a necessity for travellers from Canada to India to go through the extra security screening process. Due to security concerns, the government implemented this security protocol earlier this week, on November 20.
Federal Transport Minister Anita Anand’s office announced the official news of the increase in the security screening method for travellers heading to India from Canada. In a recently released statement, Anita Anand said that the government decided to implement extra security screening for passengers to India on a temporary basis “out of an abundance of caution.”
Back in October, an Air India flight bound for Chicago from New Delhi received a bomb threat. Later, the aircraft was diverted to Iqaluit. The scare turned out to be a fake one with no bombs discovered on the plane. Following the unexpected alert, the extensive security screening was finalised. Now, the minister confirmed the news of the Canadian government rolling back the extra screening measures.
Why Did Canada Lift The Newly Implemented Measure Suddenly?
Though the government has lifted the measures, they did not share particular reasons behind the sudden change in decision and official announcement. Every passenger travelling to India had to undergo a strict process of multiple checks before entering the restricted areas in airports. A screening of their baggage was conducted as well.
Several reports published online highlighted how the extra security screening process led to flight delays. In addition, long queues of passengers waiting to catch their flights were seen at many airports.
