It’s the first long weekend of the year! All thanks to the 75th Republic Day. You get to plan a great weekend away with your friends and family. Yet you can enjoy the patriotic vibes if you plan accordingly. Delhiites get to enjoy the vibrant and enthusiastic live parade and air show on the Kartavya Path or cosily from their home. You could do that too, I mean cosily watch the parade or fly to Delhi! If not then, head over to these memorial spots in south India and explore its history over this weekend.

1. Gandhi Memorial Museum, Tamil Nadu

This place houses the blood-stained clothes of Gandhi when he was assassinated in New Delhi. Then head over to this memorial spot in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. This city also offers a historical background for the memorial because Gandhiji took Harijans or untouchables to Meenakshi Temple. This was seen as a historic moment in Indian society.

2. Cellular Jail, Port Blair

This jail was feared by all as being banished across the black water or kala pani was one of the most gruesome punishments back in the day. It was built in 1906, the prisoners were at the mercy of guards and officials. In turn, they tortured prisoners too much. This is now a memorial museum in south india and has exhibitions on various freedom fighters. Do not miss out on the light and sound show held here.

3. French War Memorial, Tamil Nadu

Another memorial in South India is dedicated to the war heroes of World War I in Puducherry. It is called French as Puducherry still has a lot of French-Indian influence and is dedicated to these residents. There are bronze plaques that list the names of the brave soldiers who died fighting for the country in World War I and World War II.

4. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Memorial, Tamil Nadu

It is constructed to honor the life and remarkable accomplishments of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 11th President of India. This is situated in this hometown in Rameshwaram. You will find some of his unique collections, which include missile replicas and information on the Pokhran Nuclear Test; these are kept at this museum. Even his home in Rameshwaram is open for visits and has been turned into a museum called “House of Kalam”.

5. Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Tamil Nadu

This memorial spot in south india is one of the picturesque ones on the list! It is situated in Kanyakumari’s southernmost tip. Hence you will get to enjoy the waves splashing against the rock on which this memorial is set. This was built to honour the place where Swami Vivekananda attained enlightenment at this spot. There is even a meditation hall at the memorial for visitors to meditate.
