After the first phase of runway repair and expansion that took place in February earlier this year, this is the second phase of Chandigarh Airport going under construction to expand their runway. Between May 12 to May 31, all air traffic will remain closed which means no commercial flights, as well as military flights, will operate from Chandigarh airport.
What’is In It?
The closure of the airport will certainly affect a lot of passengers and especially, during the time of summer vacation starting later this month. It handles 30 commercial flights daily, including international flights to Dubai, Sharjah and Bangkok. The airport also sees an Indian Air Force (IAF) base that had relocated all its aircrafts to alternative bases across North India.
The phase 2 of this upgrade includes an extension of the runway from 9,000 feet to 10,400 feet which will see flight operations taking place during the day, and the extension work will happen during the night. The expansion of runways is an initiative to enable international flights that will connect destinations in Europe, Australia and the US.
