Chandigarh-Manali National Highway Are Shut For 2 Days; Trains On Kalka-Shimla Line Suspended

Landslides and heavy rains are a common concern in India. With its diverse topography and monsoon season, the country faces a heightened risk of these natural disasters. Authorities have suspended all trains on the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway track until August 6 due to landslides and bad road conditions. The incidents have been caused by continuous heavy rainfall. Times Of India reports that the Chandigarh-Manali highway will also be closed for 2 days.

After a week of heavy rainfall in Himachal and Haryana, the rail and road routes have suffered significant damage. Officials stated that the Railways plan to run six pairs of temporary trains between Shimla and Solan as an alternative.

Repair work is taking longer than usual because of extensive damage at over 100 locations between Kalka and Solan, especially near Koti, Sonwara, and in the Shivalik Hill belt, reported Times Of India.

As per the reports, officials conducted a trial run of the engine between Shimla and Solan to initiate the restoration of rail service. However, the track from Solan to Kalka remains unrepaired for train operations.

Due to damages at various places along the rail tracks, train movement will be suspended for the next 3 weeks. The inspection is scheduled for August 6 before resuming train services. Currently, a local train between Shimla and Solan is planned to operate.

Additionally, the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway will remain closed between Mandi Pandoh for two days due to bad weather.

Landslides continue to be a significant natural hazard in India, especially during the monsoon season. The country’s hilly terrain and heavy rainfall make it susceptible to these unpredictable events, posing risks to communities and infrastructure.

Timely monitoring, proactive measures, and disaster preparedness remain crucial to minimize the impact of landslides and ensure the safety and well-being of the population in vulnerable areas.
