Listen, we’re not here to start a debate about which Indian comfort food is better. For many, it’s dal khichdi, for many it’s Rajma Chawal. It is a delicious blend of spices along with nutritious kidney beans. The famous Chef Kunal Kapur, between the two, seems to favour the latter. In a recent Instagram post, he shared how he felt about the dish and we couldn’t help but agree! Would you agree with him?

It is cheap, it is nutritious, and most important of all, it is absolutely delicious. It is also relatively easy to make so if you live alone, Rajma Chawal can easily be your go-to dish. It’s also super cost-effective and its components have a long shelf life so you don’t have to worry about it going to waste.

Perhaps, it is because of these particular reasons that the renowned chef Kunal Kapur wants to declare Rajma Chawal as the national dish of India. He shared a post on Instagram which shows an image of him holding a placard that seems to be edited to say “Petition to make Rajma Chawal National Food of India.”

White it does seem like Biryani, Idli, Poha, and Dal Khichdi are being dealt a rough hand, you can’t deny that Rajma Chawal would not be entirely undeserving of the title. It is a simple yet delicious dish.

That Indian cuisine is diverse, is a fact recognised universally. While it may be a lot to people who aren’t used to the host of spices it uses, for Indians, these spices are the essence of Indian flavours. So it isn’t a huge surprise that it has such strong contenders when it comes to the National dish.

Rajma Chawal is one strong contender but it is also important to be mindful of other amazing Indian dishes. While Biryani, Idli, and Khichdi are extremely popular, it is time we show some love to momos, shawarma, and even dosa as comfort food items that have reached the hearts as well as stomachs of many Indians.
