Chef Ranveer Brar is one chef that our mothers have long relied on for trying out delicious recipes at home. Many of us have often seen our mothers watching his YouTube videos to prepare dinner. He is not just a chef but also a popular personality, known for his role as a judge on MasterChef India, and for being an actor, poet, and writer—a true man of many talents. In the latest episode of Sunday Brunch, our Editor-in-Chief, Kamya Jani, met with Chef Ranveer Brar at Shifuku by Curly Tales for a fun and insightful session where we learned how to make sushi directly from the chef himself. The episode was filled with exciting moments and anecdotes shared by the chef. Curious to know how it went? Check out the video on the Curly Tales YouTube channel.
Ranveer Brar Talked About Her Grandmother’s Cooking
The highlight of the episode was undoubtedly the sushi-making session with Chef Ranveer Brar. He taught us how to make a Yin-Yang Maki roll and even suggested adding it to Shifuku’s menu. Being the gracious person he is, he jokingly added that he wouldn’t charge any royalties for it! While making the sushi, he shared several tips and tricks, such as how to avoid applying pressure when cutting sushi to prevent the rice from falling apart.
We also delved into Chef Ranveer’s personal culinary influences, especially his grandmother. When asked about his favourite dish made by her, he shared how much he loved her baingan ka bharta, which she used to roast on a chulha. Another cherished memory was her churi, made by crumbling a paratha with ghee and sugar—an absolute delight, he recalled.
Continuing the conversation, Chef Ranveer shared a touching daily ritual his grandmother followed. Every morning, she would recite Ardaas (a Sikh prayer), fill a pot with water for the family to consume throughout the day, and recite Ardaas again while holding the pot. When a young Ranveer asked why she recited it twice, she explained that it was to infuse the water with positive intent and blessings for the prosperity of those who drank it. There are certainly endless lessons we can learn from our grandmothers.

Cooking And Eating Is A Cycle
As Ranveer attempted to prepare another type of sushi during the session, Kamya Jani remarked on how cooking can often be an underappreciated task, especially for mothers who cook for their families every day without much acknowledgment. Chef Ranveer Brar agreed, emphasising that cooking and eating form a cycle. He highlighted that the role of the cook—be it a chef or a mother—is to infuse love and intent into their cooking, while the role of the eaters is to acknowledge and appreciate the effort behind the food. He suggested a simple yet impactful practice: every time we finish a meal, we should tell our mothers how delicious the food was.
This episode was packed with many more tips on sushi-making and valuable life lessons. To catch all the moments, watch the full episode on the Curly Tales YouTube channel.
