Mumbai – the city that never sleeps because apparently, it is up all night drinking. That is if you go by the reports that have been circulated recently. It seems that drinking and driving in the financial capital has risen by more than 900 per cent compared to last year during the same period. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about drunk driving cases in Mumbai and the police’s effort to curb it.

Mumbai Sees Nearly 4,200 Drunk Driving Cases In Six Months

According to an article which was recently published by The Free Press Journal or the FPJ, the Mumbai Police has recorded a whopping 4,196 cases of drunk driving. This is just between January 1 2024, and July 6 2024, this year! Last year during the same time, the number was a measly 447.

Following are the areas that have seen the most number of drunk driving cases: –

  • Ghatkopar: 164
  • Dahisar: 164
  • Vakola: 170
  • MIDC: 178
  • Mulund: 185
  • Oshiwara: 187
  • Trombay: 228
  • Nagpada: 230
  • Santacruz: 234
  • DN Nagar: 244
  • Sakinaka: 264
  • Sahar: 288

As per officials, the high number of drunk driving cases in these areas can be attributed to the high concentration of bars and restaurants in these areas. In order to combat the issue, Mumbai Police has increased nakabandi more effectively monitor motorists.

938.7 Per Cent Increase In Cases Compared To Last Year

Compared to last year’s numbers, there has been a whopping 938.7 per cent spike in drunk driving cases.

The following are the areas with the lowest drunk driving cases in the last six months: –

  • Worli: 22
  • Kurla: 19
  • Antop Hill: 17
  • Colaba: 17
  • Matunga: 15
  • Mahim: 14
  • Wadala: 14
  • Kanjurmarg: 6
  • Pydhonie: 5
  • Marine Drive: 2
  • Dharavi: 0
  • Powai: 0

Explaining the reason behind this, officials state that it is not because people may not be drinking in these areas but because those who do, either walk home, take public transport or take a cab.
