According to the Economic Times, Delhi airport is all set to begin trials of advanced full-body scanners in May. This will allow quicker movement of passengers at the security screening stage. So far, four scanners have been placed at the airport, of which two are installed at Terminal 1 and the other two at Terminal 3.

Ensuring people that no personal images will be stored in the system, the Delhi Airport authorities explained that these full-body scanners will generate a standardised 2D image that is preset on a human avatar. Furthermore, all scanned data will be securely stored with access restricted to authorised agencies.

As per reports, such full-body scanner technology is already set up at major airports in the US, Canada, and Australia. It allows rapid screening, with each scan taking only three seconds. Overall, the system is capable of handling up to 1,200 scans per hour.

Reports suggest that the IT interface for these machines at the Delhi Airport is being finalised. Upon completion of the trial period, a committee led by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) will analyse the results and establish standard operating procedures for full-scale implementation. These advanced scanners can detect both metallic and non-metallic threats, including explosives. This will provide a significant upgrade over existing, conventional metal detectors.

These scanners are equipped with four touch-screen monitors for real-time image analysis and passenger instructions. They are designed to accommodate individuals ranging from 3.3 feet to 6.7 feet in height. It is to be noted that Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has already been testing full-body scanners for about a year now.
