CT Review: I’ve Always Avoided Whisky, Until A Guided Tasting At Indri Visitor Centre Changed My Mind

From barley and copper stills to guided tastings of Dru, Agneya, and the Diwali Collector’s Edition, here’s how a day at the distillery completely changed my perspective on whisky.

Some experiences change the way you see something forever. For me, that moment happened during a visit to the visitor centre of Indri Single Malt, crafted by Piccadilly Agro Industries Limited in Indri. And the funny part? I’m someone who usually runs in the opposite direction when hard liquor, especially whisky, is involved. But one day at the distillery was all it took to completely change my perspective.

When A Whisky Skeptic Walked Into The Indri Visitor Centre

Let me start with a confession: I’ve never really been a whisky person. The strong aroma, the intensity, the idea that you have to “develop a taste for it,” it always felt a little intimidating. I always assumed appreciating a good single malt required years of drinking experience. So when I got the opportunity to visit the Indri Experience Centre, I was curious but also slightly unsure of what to expect.

Would it be interesting? Possibly. Is it going to make me like whisky? I highly doubted it.

Turns out, I was completely wrong.

A Massive Distillery In Rural Haryana

The experience began as soon as we entered the sprawling distillery complex. Spread across 168 acres, the scale of the place is impressive. The idea that premium single malt whisky, which originates in the fields of rural Haryana, eventually makes its way around the world is astounding.

The moment you enter the visitor centre, the mood changes. The building itself is beautiful. The façade uses reclaimed 19th-century Nanakshahi bricks, along with fluted columns and textured walls that give the space a timeless charm.

Within the centre, you’ll find:

  • a tasting room
  • a stylish whisky bar
  • a museum that tells the story of the brand
  • a merchandise boutique
  • a laboratory
  • and a cosy whisky lounge perfect for relaxing

It feels less like a factory and more like a beautiful cultural experience built around whisky.

Learning How Whisky Is Actually Made

The guided tour through the distillery is where things get really interesting. I had never given much thought to the amount of labour involved in making a single malt whisky until this visit. Six-row barley is used to start the process, and it goes through a number of steps before becoming whisky.

It was finally time for the guided tasting, which I was both anxious about and looking forward to.

But this wasn’t just about drinking whisky. It was about learning how to appreciate it. Our guide walked us through how to observe the colour, smell the aromas, and slowly explore the flavours on the palate.

We tasted three different expressions of Indri:

  • Indri Dru, a powerful bourbon cask-aged whisky available only in duty-free stores
  • Indri Agneya, a slightly peated expression aged in bourbon and sherry casks
  • Indri Diwali Collector’s Edition, matured in Marsala wine casks

And this is where my perspective really changed. Instead of tasting just alcohol, I started noticing layers I had never paid attention to before: notes of vanilla, dried fruits, caramel, warm spices, oak, chocolate, and gentle smokiness. It suddenly made sense why whisky lovers speak about flavours the way wine enthusiasts do.

Ending The Day With Beautiful Cocktails

Just when I thought the experience had peaked, the day ended with a curated cocktail session. These cocktails weren’t made only with Indri whisky. They also featured other spirits from the Piccadilly portfolio, including Camikara Rum and Cashmir Vodka. Each cocktail highlighted the character of the spirit in a different way. It was the perfect way to end an exciting day of exploration.

At the end of the day, one thing was very evident. There is more to the Indri Experience Centre than just whisky. It’s about understanding the journey from barley fields to exquisitely aged single malt; it’s about heritage, craftsmanship, patience, and storytelling.

And for someone who used to completely avoid whisky, this was an unexpectedly eye-opening experience. Sometimes all it takes is one well-crafted experience to change your mind. For me, that experience happened at Indri.
