France has now passed a landmark law to ban social media for children under the age of 15. It has become the first country in the European Union to adopt such a restriction. The ban may come into force at the start of the new school year in September. Here’s why this decision was taken.
France To Ban Social Media For Children Under 15
The French government is grappling with the impact of digital platforms on young children, which is why the country has decided to ban social media for children under the age of 15. According to The Times of India, the new rule is backed by both houses of Parliament and is one of the final flagship measures of President Emmanuel Macron’s second term. Apart from banning social media, the law also prohibits the use of mobile phones in high schools.
Reportedly, Emmanuel Macron wants the ban to come into force in September this year. However, the law will undergo a constitutional review before its official implementation. Notably, this ban in France excludes access to online encyclopaedias as well as educational and scientific directories.

What’s The Reason Behind This Ban?
According to The Times of India, the decision was taken due to growing concern over the impact of social media on children’s mental health. Several French families have alleged that harmful content online is leading to negative consequences among teenagers. Excessive use of social media is also linked to lower self-esteem and exposure to harmful content online.
According to France, this new rule can significantly help protect children and teenagers online. As per a report by News18, children below the age of 15 will not be able to create social media accounts. Existing accounts belonging to users under 15 will also be shut down from January 2027. Reportedly, Australia has already approved a social media ban for users under 16, while Spain, Denmark, Greece and the UK are also considering implementing similar restrictions in their countries.
