In the past few months, India has seen a rise in the number of several wildlife species, including tigers and Gujarat’s Asiatic lions. The lion population, too, continues to grow steadily. While the increasing numbers suggest progress, the ground reality tells a different story. Scroll down to know more.
Increase In Gujarat’s Asiatic Lions
As of January 31, 2026, Gujarat is home to 891 Asiatic lions. According to The New Indian Express, the state government shared these numbers in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, and yes, it sounds like great news. The total includes 255 male lions, 405 lionesses, and 231 adorable cubs. That clearly shows growth. But here’s the twist: in the last three years, 322 lions have also died due to natural and unnatural causes. So while the population is rising, the story isn’t all celebration.
One thing that really stands out is the big number of cubs. Yes, more cubs usually mean growth, which sounds exciting. However, cubs are also the most fragile. They often face the risk of illness, hunger, and harsh surroundings. In 2024, the state recorded 165 lion deaths that included 40 lions, 44 lionesses, and 79 cubs.

What’s Causing Lion Deaths?
As per The New Indian Express, out of the 322 lion deaths in three years, 258 happened due to natural causes. In 2024, natural deaths included 28 lions, 28 lionesses, and 68 cubs. In 2025, the count was 28 lions, 38 lionesses, and 55 cubs, and in January 2026, six more lions died. Why? Ageing, territorial fights, diseases, and tough living conditions.
In the same three-years, 64 lions died due to unnatural causes. In 2024, this included 12 lions, 16 lionesses, and 11 cubs. In 2025, four lions, six lionesses, 11 cubs, and one unidentified carcass were recorded under unnatural deaths, and in January 2026, three more were added to the list. These deaths are connected to human-wildlife conflict, accidents, or dangers near villages and roads.
