Mumbai is getting a little stricter about what can light up its streets this festive season. The Mumbai Police have issued a preventive order banning the bursting of firecrackers, fireworks and rockets on public roads and streets, while also prohibiting the use of high-intensity laser lights and searchlight beams across the city. Scroll on to know more about this.

Mumbai Police Impose Firecracker, Laser Ban On Public Roads

According to The Times of India, the restrictions came into effect from midnight on October 6 and will remain in place until December 4, 2026, unless withdrawn earlier. So, if you were planning to turn a Mumbai street into your personal Diwali fireworks zone, you may want to rethink that plan.

Under the new order, people cannot burst firecrackers, fireworks, rockets or similar items on public roads, streets and other public areas within the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate.

The order also covers laser lights, high-intensity lumen lights and searchlight beams. The restriction is aimed at preventing these lights from creating hazards for motorists, pedestrians and others in public spaces.

Why Has Mumbai Imposed These Restrictions?

The order comes ahead of the festive season, when the use of fireworks and high-intensity lighting typically increases across the city. It follows directions issued by the Bombay High Court on September 22, 2026, in a suo motu public interest litigation concerning environmental issues.

The court had directed authorities to prevent firecrackers from being burst on public streets and roads and to take steps against high-intensity lights and laser beams, citing concerns around air and noise pollution as well as public safety.

Mumbai Police have warned that anyone who violates the restrictions could face legal action under applicable laws. These include the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Explosives Act, 1884, depending on the nature of the violation.

The order is specifically focused on public roads, streets and public areas within the Brihanmumbai Police Commissionerate. It will remain in force until midnight on December 4, unless the restrictions are withdrawn earlier.
