A big green project is coming to Mumbai. The city is set to get a world-class Central Park spread over 295 acres, bringing together the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road area. Officials say the park will offer wide open spaces, sports facilities, and places to relax, making it one of the largest urban green zones in the country. Scroll down to know more!
Mumbai To Get Central Park
Officials presented the park proposal to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on December 15, 2025. According to Mid-Day, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and architect Hafeez Contractor, who designed the project, attended the presentation of the Central Park plan. The project carries a tender value of ₹550 crore.
CM declared the park as “the biggest gift for Mumbaikars”. While some may worry about the Mahalaxmi Racecourse’s heritage, the Chief Minister has assured that it will remain fully protected. The project will not add any concrete structures on the surface, apart from walking paths.
The Mahalaxmi Racecourse will form the core of the Central Park, while the Coastal Road area will expand the green space, resulting in a 295-acre park. Another amazing news is that a 10 lakh sq. ft. sports complex will take shape below the park, bringing facilities for international sports and Indian favourites like Kho-Kho and Kabaddi. Visitors will even spot horses within the park, keeping the racecourse’s rich legacy alive while giving Mumbai a fresh green escape.
Here’s What To Expect From Park
Central Park will offer something for everyone. As per Mid-Day, a 12-acre city forest will help cut pollution and add fresh oxygen to the city. Another 77 acres will open up as gardens and outdoor concert spaces, perfect for events and weekend outings.
A 31-acre zone will house a botanical garden, an indoor concert arena, and a convention centre. Below the central garden, a multi-sport arena will come up with facilities for aquatics, boxing, skating, gymnastics, basketball, and more, giving young athletes and sports lovers a new hub.
Getting to the park will be smooth and hassle-free. An underground corridor will connect it directly to Metro 3’s Nehru Science Centre station and extend towards Haji Ali and the Coastal Road. The project also includes parking for 1,200 cars and 100 buses to keep traffic in check. A 1,200-metre underground passage will further link the park to the Coastal Road.
Apart from this, Thane is also set for major development. It will soon have India’s tallest viewing tower at 260 metres. This place will leave you awestruck with its snow park, amusement and adventure parks, a musical concert centre, and an advanced sports complex. An 18.4 km green corridor will connect these areas to Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
