Ganeshotsav in India is a very big celebration, and many devotees also show their creativity in making Lord Ganesha idols. But a group of Indian researchers took creativity to a whole new level by making a handmade Bappa out of pure snow in Antarctica and performing a sustainable visarjan. Here’s how they did it!

Researchers from the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research in Antarctica celebrated Ganeshotsav in a very eco-friendly way this year. A video shared by @anirudhdhar on Instagram shows the team creating a Bappa idol purely out of snow. They followed all the rituals for the snow-made idol, performed puja, offered prasad and celebrated a lot, just like they would at home.
They also performed an eco-friendly visarjan by immersing the idol in a bucket of water. The snow sculpture Bappa this way goes back to the surrounding snowscapes, symbolising creation and returning to nature.
Modaks were also offered as prasad to everyone on the team and, honestly, the celebration was as sustainable as it can get. The caption under the video read, “Taking “eco-friendly immersion” to a whole new extreme 15,000 km away from home — our handmade snow Bappa is about as sustainable as it can get. A Story Of Creativity And Devotion
This story not only shows creativity but also shows that devotees can go to incredible lengths to celebrate Ganesh Utsav under extreme conditions. Even though they are miles away from their country and culture, they don’t let this obstacle stop them from celebrating one of the most cherished festivals.
In Antarctica, they obviously cannot bring heavy clay idols. So, they used their creativity, blended it with tradition and built an eco-friendly Ganpati idol out of ice and snow. This is amazing, right? And this is the reason why this video is now going viral online.
